the victor's cup

I stumbed on this when reading a friend's blog and it reminded me of when I had the exact poem hanging in my room as a teenager. I feel like I needed it so much today. For some reason of which I know not, and despite all the good things in my life right now, tonight I found myself lying on the kitchen floor sobbing - all the meanwhile Morgan crawled on top of me with a big smile. So after I calmed down, I stood up, gave Morgan a hug, proceeded to feed her dinner while doing the dishes. Times get rough, even if it's a nonsense emotion with no origin, but you can't quit.

Must Not Quit
by Julia Jane Sutton

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest, if you must, but don't you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about,
When he might have won had he stuck it out;
Don't give up though the pace seems slow--
You may succeed with another blow.

Often the goal is nearer than,
It seems to a faint and faltering man,
Often the struggler has given up,
When he might have captured the victor's cup,
And he learned too late when the night slipped down,
How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out--
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far,
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit--
It's when things seem worst that you must not quit.

  1. I like that line "rest, if you must, but don't you quit."

Hope today goes better for you. I don't like the days I end up sobbing for who knows what reason. :(

  2. What a great poem!

I had a young women's leader as a youth that reminded me that when I feel like quitting, or just lying on the kitchen floor and crying (been there, so many times) that there are untold numbers of invisible cheerleaders - ancestors and future generations alike - who wait besides me silently willing me to keep going. Envisioning all those people with my success in mind helps me to pick myself back up and not quit. :)

You've got a visible and not so silent cheerleader here as well! Keep going! Love you!!
